At Hilltown, students learn through hands-on, creative, and integrated lessons that connect ideas across subjects and spark curiosity. Our curriculum blends academic rigor with arts integration, student voice, and real-world relevance. Learning is designed to be engaging, meaningful, and inclusive for all students. Teachers follow the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks while staying true to Hilltown’s mission of fostering creativity, collaboration, and interdisciplinary learning. Students explore big ideas through units that combine subjects like science, social studies, reading, writing, and math, often through project-based learning and thematic instruction. Topics such as ancient civilizations, world religions, the human body, and national parks come to life through cross-curricular exploration. Each week, students share their learning with the wider community during All School gatherings.
Hilltown uses high-quality, research-based programs that grow with students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Literacy instruction includes Collaborative Classroom programs such as Being a Reader and Being a Writer in grades K to 4, and EL, as well as teacher-designed, standards-aligned curriculum in grades 5 to 8. Writing is assessed using consistent rubrics and student portfolios, culminating in an eighth-grade capstone research project. In mathematics, Hilltown uses the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum across all grades. Teachers enrich lessons with tools such as Math 180, 3-Act Math, and Esti-Mysteries. Instruction emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving. Science and social studies are taught through inquiry and exploration. Teachers use high-quality resources such as Mystery Science, OpenSciEd, iCivics, Children Discovering Justice, and Facing History and Ourselves. Lessons follow the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to offer multiple ways for students to access content, express ideas, and stay engaged.
Hilltown is committed to supporting the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally. Every classroom includes at least one teaching assistant, and our growing student support team ensures that students receive the care and guidance they need to thrive. This team includes a reading specialist, math specialist, occupational therapist, speech-language pathologist, school psychologist, and adjustment counselor. Our special education program is staffed by three licensed special education teachers as well as Academic Support Coordinator. These educators provide individualized instruction, accommodations, and support for students with IEPs and 504 plans. Targeted academic interventions such as SIPPS, Read Naturally, and Orton-Gillingham are used to build foundational literacy and math skills. The adjustment counselor supports students’ emotional well-being through social-emotional learning, counseling, and collaboration with families and staff. Across the school, teachers and support staff work together to create a learning environment where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.
At Hilltown, the arts are not add-ons. They are central to how students learn, express themselves, and connect with the world. All students receive regular instruction in visual arts, music and the performing arts, physical education, and wellness. These classes nurture creativity, build confidence, and support students’ social and emotional development. In Visual arts, students explore a variety of materials and techniques while learning to observe closely, think critically, and express ideas through imagery. Art projects often connect to classroom studies in science or social studies, helping students explore content through creative expression. Music and performing arts promote both individual growth and collaborative skills. Students sing, play instruments, and explore rhythm, melody, and improvisation. Many classes incorporate theater, movement, or drama, which help students develop empathy, spontaneity, and confidence when speaking or performing in front of others. Physical education and wellness support healthy development of the body and mind. In physical education, students play games and engage in movement activities that promote teamwork, coordination, and resilience. Wellness lessons help students build self-awareness, emotional regulation, and an understanding of how to care for their physical and mental health. Spanish is taught several times per week in grades 5 through 8 as part of a four-year sequence. The program helps students develop communication skills, cultural awareness, and confidence in language learning. Lessons include conversation, reading, writing, and exploration of Spanish-speaking cultures. What makes Hilltown unique is the way these subjects are integrated into classroom learning. The arts and wellness are not taught in isolation but are woven into how students explore academic content. A science unit on sound may include an investigation of musical instruments. A social studies project on ancient civilizations might involve designing masks or staging a short play. This integrated approach encourages curiosity, supports different learning styles, and helps students make meaningful connections across disciplines.
